Sainz leads Leclerc and Verstappen on the grid
Carlos Sainz has claimed pole position for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, edging out teammate Charles Leclerc and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. It is the Spaniard's first pole position of the 2023 season and the third of his career.
Sainz set a time of 1:18.096 on his final lap of Q3 to secure top spot. Leclerc was just 0.072 seconds behind in second place, while Verstappen was a further 0.056 seconds back in third. Sergio Perez will start fourth for Red Bull, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes and Fernando Alonso in the Alpine.
Sainz will be hoping to convert his pole position into a victory on Sunday and close the gap to Verstappen in the championship standings. The Dutchman currently leads the championship by 46 points, but Sainz will be confident of his chances at Silverstone, a circuit where he has always performed well.
