Solar Storm Watch!
The Biggest Solar Flare in 20 Years
On May 10th, 2024, Planet Earth was struck by the biggest solar flare in nearly 20 years. The flare triggered a severe geomagnetic storm watch, the first of its kind in nearly two decades.
Northern Lights Expected
The geomagnetic storm is expected to cause the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, to be visible as far south as Ohio. Skywatchers in the northern United States and Canada are expected to have a good view of the celestial display.
Radio and GPS Disruptions Possible
The storm could also cause disruptions to radio communications and GPS navigation systems. NOAA has issued a warning to pilots and mariners to be aware of the potential for disruptions.
Unusual Event
NOAA described the solar flare as an unusual event. The GOES-16 satellite captured the eruption from the sun, which occurred around 2 pm. EDT on May 10th.
