Southern California Earthquake Shakes Region
4.4-Magnitude Temblor Felt Widely
Los Angeles, CA - Monday, December 12, 2024
A light 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Monday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The temblor occurred at 12:20 p.m. PST and was centered near El Sereno, a neighborhood in East Los Angeles.
The quake was widely felt across the Los Angeles area, including in downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and San Diego. Buildings swayed, and some residents reported minor damage. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
The USGS reports that the quake was part of a series of small earthquakes that have been occurring in the area in recent weeks. It is not clear if this is a sign of a larger earthquake to come.
Seismologists are continuing to monitor the situation and are urging residents to be prepared for aftershocks. The USGS has issued a safety advisory for the area, and residents are advised to follow these tips:
- Stay away from windows and other potential hazards.
- If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road and stop.
- If you are indoors, drop to the ground, cover your head and neck, and hold on to something sturdy.
- Be prepared for aftershocks.
