Netanyahu Addresses UN General Assembly
Prime Minister Warns of Iranian Threat
Israel's leader highlights danger posed by nuclear program
In his address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of the growing threat posed by Iran's nuclear program. He called on the international community to take action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, which he said would have "catastrophic consequences" for the region and the world.
Netanyahu presented evidence that Iran is continuing to develop its nuclear program in violation of the 2015 nuclear deal. He said that Iran has been enriching uranium to levels far beyond what is permitted by the deal and that it has been developing new types of centrifuges that can produce enriched uranium more quickly and efficiently.
Netanyahu argued that the nuclear deal has failed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and that it has actually emboldened Iran to pursue its nuclear ambitions. He said that the deal should be scrapped and that a new deal should be negotiated that would prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Netanyahu's speech was met with mixed reactions. Some world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, praised Netanyahu for his strong stance on Iran. Others, including French President Emmanuel Macron, criticized Netanyahu for his hawkish rhetoric and for undermining the nuclear deal.
The debate over Iran's nuclear program is likely to continue in the coming months. The Trump administration has said that it is considering withdrawing from the nuclear deal, and Iran has threatened to resume its nuclear program if the deal is scrapped.
